스웨덴제 옵티므스 (OPTIMUS, Sweden, 1899- )

 

Optimus A.B.(옵티므스 주식회사)는 스웨덴에 본사가 있는 금속제품 메이커로서 우리나라에도 STOVE가 많이 보급되어 널리 알려진 브랜드이다.

Optimus A.B.는 1899년에 Carl Boos, Carl Neiglick, Peter Ostberg 라고 하는 3인의 기술자에 의해서 창설 되었으며 Optimus는 라틴어이며「최적인」이라고 하는 의미의 단어인데 영어에서는 optimum이 같은 의미의 단어에 해당한다.

처음은 스톡홀름에 본사와 공장이 있었지만 점차 비좁게 되어 공장은 1908년에 스톡홀름의 북쪽 25Km에 위치한 Upplands Vasby에 이전했고 그 후 1919년에는 본사도 스톡홀름으로부터 Upplands Vasby에 이전했다.

1960년대에 들어오면 Optimus사는 스웨덴 국내에 있는 경합사의 등유·가솔린 스토브 부문을 흡수하였다.

그 시대 경합 3사는 LP가스를 연료로 하는 제품생산에 주력 할 방침이었다.

Optimus사는 LP가스 제품은 생산하지 않고 등유·가솔린 같은 액체연료 스토브를 주력으로 할 방침을 잡았다. 그리고 1962년에 Primus, 1963년에 Radius, 1966년에는 Svea의 등유·가솔린 부문을 흡수했다.

즉 Primus, Radius, Svea의 등유·가솔린 스토브의 제조·판매권을 Optimus사가 가지게 되었다. 다만 Radius의 상표는 사용되지 않았다.

이렇게 해서 1960년대에는 Optimus, Primus, Svea의 ３브랜드의 스토브가 Optimus사로부터 출시되었는데 Primus와 Svea의 등유·가솔린 제품은 대부분이 1970년대에 생산을 종료한 것 같다.

Optimus 브랜드의 등유 스토브는 그 후 LP가스 제품에 밀리면서도 생산을 계속했지만 1996년 끝까지 남은 OO와 45의 생산을 종료했다.

다만 가솔린을 연료로 하는 8R, 123R 등은 현재도 생산되고 있다.

Optimus의 제품번호를 뒤따르고 있는 “L자”에는 의미가 있는데 Ｌ은 양철제 수납캔과 함께 판매한 모델이며 수납캔이 붙지 않는 모델은 “L자”가 없다. 즉 우리나라에 가장 많이 보급된 모델 00와 45의 경우 00, OOL, 45, 45L이 있는데 OO와 45모델은 수납캔(케이스)가 없이 판지BOX(종이)박스로 출시되었으며 케이스는 수입사에서 양철, 알미늄으로 제작하여 판매했다. 아래사진의 양철로 된 하늘색 캔(케이스)과 같이 출시된 것이 OOL모델로서 통칭 OO구형이라고 불리우며 45L 역시 양철로 된  캔(케이스)와 같이 출시되었는데 바람막이가 있는게 특징이며 통칭 45구형이라고 불린다.

또 R은 노즐청소기능이 있거나 또는 45R과 같이 화력조절기구를 추가하거나 개량판을 뜻한다. 즉 현재까지 생산하고 있는 Svea 123모델의 경우 Optimus사에서 노즐청소기능을 추가하여 Svea 123R 모델로 명명하고 있으며 우리나라에서는 보기 힘든 45모델이 하나 더 있는데 PHOEBUS 625같이 노즐부에 BAR를 부착하여 화력조절이 용이하도록 “화력조절기”가 있는 것이 45R 모델이다.

첫 번째 사진은 일본 등산전문지 산과 계곡사의 1971년의 잡지 광고인데 여기에는「옵티므스(구명 라디우스)」라고 기재되어 있어 일본에서는 Radius가 지명도가 높았음을 알 수 있는 사진이다.

Optimus     Website: http://www.optimus.se Optimus is one of the oldest camping stove companies still in existence. Since their start in 1899 they have made several legendary constructions like the Hunter, the Svea 123R and the Hiker. The website is amazing - they have included the schematics for all their current models! Optimus purchased the rights to use the Primus brand name for kerosene and white gas stoves from the Primus company in 1962, and used that brand name until the 1990's. Optimus also bought the rights to the Svea brand from Primus-Sievert during the late 60's. (Thanks again to Ross Spiritburner Mellows for clarifying the information here.)
